Jon the Bus’ - Jonathon Clark; Left us unexpectedly on 25th May 2026. Jon was a member of Bude Surf Life Saving Club & worked as a Bus Driver for Go Cornwall Bus covering local bus routes and school runs. He was a regular on our beaches & a friendly face at the club, always helping out where he could & a very keen waterman in the sea / canal / lakes!

On Saturday 5th September club members gathered alongside Jon’s family & friends for a paddle out at Summerleaze to pay their respects and remember the wonderful ‘Jon the Bus’. He is deeply missed by club members, his kindness, commitment and friendship will always be remembered.

🌊🏅 Bude Nippers take on the Nationals! 🏅🌊
A team of 25 Nippers and 5 Nipper-Juniors proudly represented the club Bude at the SLSGB National Championships at Holywell Bay, 20th–22nd August 2026.

Our younger Nippers showed incredible determination, taking on some big surf on Friday and giving it everything they had. We couldn’t have been prouder!
There were some fantastic results throughout the weekend, with some outstanding performances from the team & our newcomers making a huge impact in their first National event 💪🏽

Every single Nipper should be incredibly proud of themselves. The determination, resilience and sportsmanship shown throughout the weekend were amazing to watch 🙌🏽

⭐ Nationals Youth Championships 2026 ⭐

On 17th to 19th August we took a small but mighty team of 5 juniors to Holywell Bay for the Nationals Youth Event 🙌🏽
3 great days of competition with some brilliant performances from the whole team.
Big shout out to Riley 🥈🥈 and Ema 🥉🥇 for their Flags and Sprints medals, but also to all the team for points scored in the team events 💪🏽

@surflifesavinggb National Championships is well underway with teams across the UK competing all week (Masters - Juniors - Nippers) 🙌🏽 hosting club @hbayslsc have done an unreal job with the hosting / organising / running of this event…it’s going to be a good week of big competition 🌊💪🏽🔴🟡

Tonight our Junior members have been training hard ready for the upcoming National championships that kicks off in just over 2 weeks 🤩

Their most recent round of competition took them to Polzeath at the end of July for the Cornish youth championship 💪🏽 Bude took a fantastic group of juniors for 2 fabulous days of competition!

Wall to wall sunshine, near perfect sea conditions and a great host club meant the juniors had lots of fun on the beach and in the sea between events…☀️🌊

Bude came home with a 7th place finish which was such a great result for our club and testimony to not only the individual successes but also the biggest team we have taken for several years! As a club we want to celebrate but also thank you for your commitment to our club and support for events like this – team work really does make the dream work 🌟

Happy international Lifeguard appreciation day 🙌🏽
Lifeguarding is one of the foundations of our club, and plays a huge part of the community work that we do. Over the years hundreds of members have successfully completed their lifeguard qualification and gone on to achieve amazing things and assist / rescue / save lives 🌊

Maggie Dorey completed her Lifeguard award with Bude SLSC, and is one of Budes epic RNLI lifeguards. Today she is off to Kensington Palace to represent the women lifeguards of the South West at a special event to celebrate 25 years of the RNLI and lifeguarding 🙌🏽
Maggie started her lifeguard journey from being a six year old Nipper at Bideford Bay Surf Life Saving Club, competing in various National competitions over to years to taking her SLSGB Surf Lifeguard award at Bude Surf Life Saving Club at 16. She is now working for the RNLI on Budes beaches as a Senior Lifeguard ✨

In the words of Maggie’s Dad Martin; ‘HUGE RESPECT to the coaches, trainers and assessors of the Surf Life Saving movement who made this journey possible’ .

We’re so proud of Maggie, and the lifeguards of Bude past & present for all they do to keep our beaches safe & inspire the future generation of life savers 💛❤️

During the training session coaches were made aware of the incident & were able to assist with the successful search 🙌🏽

Alongside this Club member Jay turner rescued 2 people attempting to swim from the sea pool back to the high tide line on Summerleaze beach.

Well done team, this evening was a showcase of the club doing what we do best ❤️💛

Last weekend a number of our members travelled to Torquay for the annual SLSGB summit. We were given the chance to network with other clubs, sharing ideas about training, fundraising and more.

We were also given the opportunity to showcase our club as our chairwoman Jayney Henwood lead a workshop on recruitment and retention of volunteers, and chief instructor Mark Ward delivered a workshop on volunteer patrols.

We are proud to share that three of our members were awarded for their services to surf life saving. Stephanie Clarke received a 25 year service award, Glyn Collen was awarded a rescue commendation, and John Gatrell received the prestigious lifesaver of the year award.

Please be advised, that as per the previous two years, Bude SLSC is not involved in the organisation of any events taking place on Crooklets Beach on Christmas Day due to circumstances out of our control.

However, due to the popularity of our previously held Christmas Day Swim we expect there to be members of the public who may wish to enter the water to have a swim of their own.

Therefore, in the interest of public safety, we will have a volunteer patrol from 1100hrs for a short time at Crooklets Beach on Christmas Day.

However, on 16 separate occasions our members have made the decision to enter the water to assist the public in their time of need, at times putting themselves in danger. This is not a decision that is made lightly. It’s a decision that is supported by the ongoing training provided by both our club coaches and lifeguard trainer/assessors. Our committee have deemed that at least 5 of these rescues have prevented a loss of life.

Vigilance and Service has been at the core of our club since we were founded in 1953. Our continued voluntary beach patrols are just one way that we continue to serve the public on our beaches.

Sunday 28th September marked the end of ‘main season’ on our local beaches, meaning the professional lifeguard service on Blackrock, Crooklets and Sandymouth has come to an end. To mark the occasion, club president Peter ‘Vicko’ Vickery led a march at 6pm on Crooklets Beach alongside a number of members and RNLI beach lifeguards, with a soundtrack provided by club member, Angus.

We’d like to say a massive thank you to Bude’s RNLI Beach Lifeguards for their continued support and guidance throughout what has proven to be a very busy summer.

Our masters are Cornish Champions once again!

Last weekend Team Bude travelled to Portreath for the Cornish Championships for what turned out to be an eventful two days of tough competition. Our hard work and dedication throughout the season paid off as our masters were crowned as champions of the Duchy.

Big shout out to those who were victorious in their individual events and returned to Bude with silverware!

Massive thank you to Porthreath SLSC and the competition officials for hosting a great event!

Our masters are Cornish Champions once again!

Last weekend Team Bude travelled to Portreath for the Cornish Championships for what turned out to be an eventful two days of tough competition. Our hard work and dedication throughout the season paid off as our masters were crowned as champions of the Duchy.

Big shout out to those who were victorious in their individual events and returned to Bude with silverware!

Massive congratulations to club member Summer Gatrell who has been selected to represent Cornwall at the upcoming Celtic Cup on 6th September.

Competitors from Cornwall, Devon, Wales and Wessex will meet at Branksome Chine for a day of fierce competition. Summer’s hard work and dedication has paid off with a well deserved selection to represent the Duchy.

Good luck Summer, we’ll all be cheering for you!

RESCUE - On Sunday 17th August club captain Zerren launched our IRB (Inshore Rescue Boat) ‘Margaret Frost’ at Crooklets at approximately 1730hrs to conduct a training session for some of our younger members.

At approximately 1910hrs whilst in the general area of Summerleaze, Zerren and club member Drew spotted two people on a stand up paddle board who were struggling to make headway against the offshore wind in an attempt to return to shore. The male jumped into the water and attempted to swim back to shore but made little progress.

Zerren and Drew immediately noticed that the pair were in distress and used the IRB’s speed and manoeuvrability to quickly make their way to assist. They returned the female and the stand up paddle board to shore, before assisting the male who was beginning to struggle to stay afloat.

Approximately 20 minutes later Zerren and Drew were needed once again when they spotted four casualties on stand up paddle boards drifting out to sea in the offshore wind at Crooklets after losing their paddles. Zerren and Drew used the IRB to return two of the casualties to shore before returning to sea and locating the missing paddles which they later reunited with their owners.

Drew is a second year RNLI beach lifeguard and is applying his trade to Bude’s beaches this season. This was only Drew’s second time in an IRB however his actions supported these rescues as if he was a fully qualified crew. As a committee we are extremely proud of him and he is a real credit to the club.

This is another example of our members taking decisive actions and assisting the public outside of lifeguarded hours.

Last weekend we welcomed our newest club member, ‘Fred’!

Fred is a man overboard manikin designed to simulate an unconscious casualty. He was kindly donated by Ruth Lee through their volunteer heroes campaign.

Fred joins our existing family of surf rescue manikins, AKA ‘The Ballerinas’ who simulate a conscious casualty with their hands in the air.

These manikins allow our members to practice rescue techniques in various sea conditions without putting others at risk.

They are most commonly used during our beach lifeguard courses when conducting conscious and unconscious board and tube rescues. They also allow our team of IRB (Inshore Rescue Boat) operators to keep their skills sharp with in surf rescues.

Our members were joined at high tide in some very tough conditions by members from Polzeath who participated in a board rescue event, and a swim and reverse order handicap race.
